Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy,is an effective anti-aging treatment that creates controlled micro-injuries to the top layers of the skin. This strategic wound pattern triggers the body’s natural healing response, remodeling the existing chains of collagen in your skin, resulting in the production of new cells that are tighter and softer over time. Microneedling is minimally invasive and is one of the gentlest ways to dramatically improve the appearance of your skin by smoothing the appearance of wrinkles, facial scars and stretch marks. Microneedling can even be used to treat hair loss.
However, it is important to note that not all microneedling devices are the same. At Arktos, we have made a continued commitment to excellence, safety and efficacy, by offering microneedling services with the SkinPen, the only FDA cleared and legally marketed microneedling device in the US. The SkinPen is also the only US engineered and manufactured microneedling device on the market. However, these aren’t the only big talking points about the SkinPen. The SkinPen is also more sterile than other microneedling devices, accounts for differences in skin thickness and skin type by allowing for adjustability of needle depth, and can augment other facial aesthetic treatments where they commonly fall short of optimal results.
The SkinPen is comprised of a reusable motor unit designed to be attached to sterile, disposable cartridges that house 14 micro-needles on a reciprocating head, which when turned on and placed properly against the skin can create thousands of micro-punctures into the skin. As these punctures heal, and the remodeling process works to improve the appearance of aging, facial scars, and discoloration.
In addition, the SkinPen’s cartridge design inhibits the entrance of fluids into the device, as well as includes a BioSheath the goes over the motor unit during the treatment. These precautions prevent potential cross-contamination of the motor unit between uses. Because the FDA has deemed the SkinPen a medical-grade microneedling device, SkinPen treatments can only be offered by either a physician or by aestheticians whom work in a clinic under medical directorship. Therefore, in addition to the SkinPen’s design, the fact that SkinPen microneedling treatments can only be offered by trained professionals in a medical setting helps to assure patients and providers alike the SkinPen reliably provides safe and sterile results.
The SkinPen also accounts for differences in skin thickness and skin type by allowing for your provider to control the depth of the needle penetration, along with the rate of penetration. For example, your provider may use a deeper setting and make more passes over an area that has severe acne scarring. This versatility translates into faster results with more structural improvement to the skin. The SkinPen is also designed in such a way that the needles penetrate the skin at a 90-degree angle, minimizing complications such as infection and scarring. Other microneedling devices on the market do not offer such customization abilities, and the needles on these devices often enter the skin at an angle other than the optimal 90-degrees, causing infection or scarring by ripping channels into the skin that are too deep.
An additional benefit of the SkinPen is that it “plays well with others”, meaning that microneedling treatments with the SkinPen are often combined with other facial aesthetic treatments in order to fully optimize results from both. For example, Botox does an excellent job of preventing crow’s feet wrinkles from forming, but doesn’t rejuvenate and plump the skin underneath the eyes. The SkinPen has the ability to fill in the gaps where other aesthetic treatments may fall short.
With microneedling treatments, you don’t need to expect much down time, however there are a few side effects to take note of. Healing time may vary, though most patients see results in one day to one week after treatment. Immediately following treatment, you may notice a red appearance in the areas treated or in rare cases pinpoint bleeding. Just one treatment can dramatically enhance the appearance of skin texture and brighten your complexion. More advanced skin conditions like acne scaring may need more than one session. The number of treatment sessions required will be determined during your consultation with Dr. Aida Yavari.
At Arktos Direct Care, we have peace of mind knowing that our patients are being treated with safe, superior device that we can trust. Dr. Yavari is passionate about offering the best aesthetic treatments available and is committed to helping her patients achieve radiant, natural-looking results.
